Phantom Train
A recent story from England, where two police officers reported encountering a ‘phantom train,’ brought to mind a fascinating experience my sister, Barbie Deig, shared with me years ago. In the early 1990s, while attending an outdoor revival in Evansville, Indiana, she witnessed what they believed to be a ‘phantom train.’ In this episode, she recounts her unforgettable story.

There were so many people to

where it was like, are we all

seeing this?

Like, I mean, are like hearing
it because there’s no train.

There was no train.

Welcome to episode 10.
30
00:00:57.240 –> 00:00:58.340
Speaker:
Tonight’s episode, we’re going
31
00:00:58.340 –> 00:00:59.679
Speaker:
to be talking about something I
32
00:00:59.679 –> 00:01:01.479
Speaker:
don’t hear a whole lot about
33
00:01:01.479 –> 00:01:04.129
Speaker:
Phantom trains.
34
00:01:04.129 –> 00:01:09.069
Speaker:
I came across a strange article
dated March six, twenty twenty
35
00:01:09.069 –> 00:01:13.329
Speaker:
three, that reminded me of a
situation my sister Barbie had
36
00:01:13.329 –> 00:01:16.689
Speaker:
back in the nineties and had
completely forgotten about it.
37
00:01:16.689 –> 00:01:18.189
Speaker:
According to the Staffordshire
38
00:01:18.189 –> 00:01:21.569
Speaker:
Live news site, there’s a report
39
00:01:21.569 –> 00:01:23.730
Speaker:
that terrifying Ghost Train
40
00:01:23.730 –> 00:01:25.769
Speaker:
reported in Swadlincote by two
41
00:01:25.769 –> 00:01:27.290
Speaker:
police officers.
42
00:01:27.290 –> 00:01:28.930
Speaker:
The article goes on to say that
43
00:01:28.930 –> 00:01:30.530
Speaker:
the eerie sound of a ghost train
44
00:01:30.530 –> 00:01:31.810
Speaker:
running on a rail line that no
45
00:01:31.810 –> 00:01:33.530
Speaker:
longer exists in Swadlincote has
46
00:01:33.530 –> 00:01:35.129
Speaker:
been reported by two police
47
00:01:35.129 –> 00:01:36.329
Speaker:
officers.
48
00:01:36.329 –> 00:01:40.170
Speaker:
Police Constable Jo Stafford and
Whitney Holmes Small were left
49
00:01:40.170 –> 00:01:44.170
Speaker:
spooked after suddenly hearing
the loud rumble of a train as
50
00:01:44.170 –> 00:01:47.250
Speaker:
they were getting ready to go
out on patrol at Swadlincote
51
00:01:47.250 –> 00:01:49.290
Speaker:
police station in Civic Way.
52
00:01:49.290 –> 00:01:51.810
Speaker:
They said they heard the sound
of a locomotive getting closer
53
00:01:51.810 –> 00:01:55.329
Speaker:
to them as the leaves on the
nearby trees started to blow.
54
00:01:55.329 –> 00:01:56.370
Speaker:
Then they heard the sound of a
55
00:01:56.370 –> 00:01:58.209
Speaker:
train’s horn, even though there
56
00:01:58.209 –> 00:01:59.810
Speaker:
are no rail lines for miles
57
00:01:59.810 –> 00:02:00.730
Speaker:
around.
58
00:02:03.489 –> 00:02:05.390
Speaker:
Putting on their best detective
hats.
59
00:02:05.390 –> 00:02:08.310
Speaker:
They decided to make some
inquiries and were shocked and
60
00:02:08.310 –> 00:02:10.430
Speaker:
bemused by what they found.
61
00:02:10.430 –> 00:02:12.110
Speaker:
It turns out that a railway did
62
00:02:12.110 –> 00:02:13.349
Speaker:
indeed used to run to the back
63
00:02:13.349 –> 00:02:14.750
Speaker:
of the police station with the
64
00:02:14.750 –> 00:02:16.389
Speaker:
old Swadlincote railway station
65
00:02:16.389 –> 00:02:17.750
Speaker:
existing, where the fire station
66
00:02:17.750 –> 00:02:19.270
Speaker:
now sits.
67
00:02:19.270 –> 00:02:20.669
Speaker:
The officers discovered that the
68
00:02:20.669 –> 00:02:22.430
Speaker:
Midland Road bridge used to be
69
00:02:22.430 –> 00:02:24.150
Speaker:
the crossing over the tracks,
70
00:02:24.150 –> 00:02:25.669
Speaker:
with a tunnel long since blocked
71
00:02:25.669 –> 00:02:27.349
Speaker:
up and lower Midland Road was
72
00:02:27.349 –> 00:02:28.229
Speaker:
the walkway down to the
73
00:02:28.229 –> 00:02:29.310
Speaker:
platforms.
74
00:02:29.310 –> 00:02:32.669
Speaker:
The police spokesman said we
would love to hear if anyone
75
00:02:32.669 –> 00:02:37.069
Speaker:
else has any spooky experiences
on this phantom train, or know
76
00:02:37.069 –> 00:02:40.030
Speaker:
more about the long lost
station, and would welcome
77
00:02:40.030 –> 00:02:42.669
Speaker:
pictures or stories from those
who may have been alive when it
78
00:02:42.669 –> 00:02:44.870
Speaker:
was regularly used.
79
00:02:44.870 –> 00:02:46.669
Speaker:
Passenger trains stopped running
80
00:02:46.669 –> 00:02:48.050
Speaker:
through Swadlincote more than
81
00:02:48.050 –> 00:02:49.990
Speaker:
seventy years ago in nineteen
82
00:02:49.990 –> 00:02:51.349
Speaker:
forty seven.
83
00:02:51.349 –> 00:02:53.349
Speaker:
Now this story, like I said,
84
00:02:53.349 –> 00:02:55.110
Speaker:
reminded me of something that my
85
00:02:55.110 –> 00:02:56.949
Speaker:
sister Barbie had told me back
86
00:02:56.949 –> 00:02:59.330
Speaker:
in the nineties, and I’ve
87
00:02:59.330 –> 00:03:01.629
Speaker:
interviewed her to talk about
88
00:03:01.629 –> 00:03:03.889
Speaker:
what she experienced during a,
89
00:03:03.889 –> 00:03:06.094
Speaker:
some sort of a revival that she
90
00:03:06.094 –> 00:03:09.199
Speaker:
was attending at, I believe it
91
00:03:09.199 –> 00:03:10.759
Speaker:
was triple T, I think that was
92
00:03:10.759 –> 00:03:12.360
Speaker:
the organization.
93
00:03:12.360 –> 00:03:16.379
Speaker:
And I believe that was located
at Boonville, new Harmony and,
94
00:03:16.379 –> 00:03:18.039
Speaker:
um, highway forty one.
95
00:03:18.039 –> 00:03:20.300
Speaker:
So there’s that railroad
crossing right there by the
96
00:03:20.300 –> 00:03:21.960
Speaker:
where Bi-Lo used to be.
97
00:03:21.960 –> 00:03:24.360
Speaker:
And this is my interview with
Barbie.
98
00:03:24.360 –> 00:03:27.919
Speaker:
Uh, she’s standing outside, so
you hear some crickets and bugs
99
00:03:27.919 –> 00:03:29.280
Speaker:
chirping in the background.
100
00:03:29.280 –> 00:03:30.719
Speaker:
And as far as the timeline, I
101
00:03:30.719 –> 00:03:32.159
Speaker:
believe this would have happened
102
00:03:32.159 –> 00:03:33.319
Speaker:
around nineteen eighty nine,
103
00:03:33.319 –> 00:03:34.919
Speaker:
nineteen ninety.
104
00:03:34.919 –> 00:03:36.639
Speaker:
We’re not completely sure on
that.
105
00:03:36.639 –> 00:03:38.379
Speaker:
But that’s when she I think she
106
00:03:38.379 –> 00:03:39.520
Speaker:
thinks she was about eleven
107
00:03:39.520 –> 00:03:39.960
Speaker:
years old.
108
00:03:39.960 –> 00:03:43.000
Speaker:
So that would put that around
about that time frame.
109
00:03:43.000 –> 00:03:44.759
Speaker:
So this is my interview with
Barbie.
110
00:03:46.639 –> 00:03:50.280
Speaker:
Because I went to that triple A
thing, the triple A meeting out
111
00:03:50.280 –> 00:03:55.919
Speaker:
on forty one that I’m pretty
sure is where you turn at the
112
00:03:55.919 –> 00:03:59.500
Speaker:
forty one, you know, at the, um,
you know, where they built the
113
00:03:59.500 –> 00:04:00.520
Speaker:
Bi-Lo and all that.
114
00:04:00.520 –> 00:04:02.199
Speaker:
It’s not there anymore.
115
00:04:02.199 –> 00:04:03.800
Speaker:
But that railroad track behind
116
00:04:03.800 –> 00:04:06.680
Speaker:
there is whenever the when the
117
00:04:06.680 –> 00:04:08.409
Speaker:
preacher said, anyone who wants
118
00:04:08.409 –> 00:04:10.169
Speaker:
to get saved, come up here, bow
119
00:04:10.169 –> 00:04:11.009
Speaker:
your heads.
120
00:04:11.009 –> 00:04:14.770
Speaker:
And as soon as he did this, no
train.
121
00:04:14.770 –> 00:04:18.970
Speaker:
There was nothing went by
blowing a whistle and wind blew.
122
00:04:18.970 –> 00:04:21.050
Speaker:
You couldn’t hear the pastor and
123
00:04:21.050 –> 00:04:22.209
Speaker:
there was thousands of people
124
00:04:22.209 –> 00:04:23.490
Speaker:
there.
125
00:04:23.490 –> 00:04:26.370
Speaker:
So I wish we could find the
article that was in the paper,
126
00:04:26.370 –> 00:04:28.329
Speaker:
because I remember coming home
and telling dad.
127
00:04:28.329 –> 00:04:31.370
Speaker:
And then I think it was like in
that Sunday paper.
128
00:04:31.370 –> 00:04:33.569
Speaker:
So which was neat because, I
mean, there was just so many
129
00:04:33.569 –> 00:04:35.930
Speaker:
people who witnessed nothing,
you know what I mean?
130
00:04:35.930 –> 00:04:41.009
Speaker:
There was no train to where it
was like, what in the world?
131
00:04:41.009 –> 00:04:43.569
Speaker:
Everybody heard wind was
blowing, chairs blew over
132
00:04:43.569 –> 00:04:47.569
Speaker:
because people were standing and
everybody was on that field.
133
00:04:47.569 –> 00:04:49.610
Speaker:
So it was across from Bi-Lo.
134
00:04:49.610 –> 00:04:50.850
Speaker:
I’m pretty sure that’s where it
was.
135
00:04:50.850 –> 00:04:53.810
Speaker:
If not, it was the outside.
136
00:04:53.810 –> 00:04:56.250
Speaker:
It was like outside revival
almost.
137
00:04:56.250 –> 00:04:57.569
Speaker:
So it was like Bethel Temple
138
00:04:57.569 –> 00:04:59.009
Speaker:
Crossroads, like all these big
139
00:04:59.009 –> 00:04:59.970
Speaker:
churches.
140
00:04:59.970 –> 00:05:03.410
Speaker:
So for me, I was, I think fifth
grade maybe.
141
00:05:03.410 –> 00:05:08.449
Speaker:
And so it was tons of kids and,
um, like youth pastors and a
142
00:05:08.449 –> 00:05:10.029
Speaker:
bunch of just different.
143
00:05:10.029 –> 00:05:11.870
Speaker:
I mean, people came from out of
town.
144
00:05:11.870 –> 00:05:15.790
Speaker:
So as soon as the pastor started
talking about getting saved and
145
00:05:15.790 –> 00:05:19.029
Speaker:
asking God in your life is when
and telling people to come up
146
00:05:19.029 –> 00:05:21.230
Speaker:
front, people will pray for you,
or you can stay where you’re at
147
00:05:21.230 –> 00:05:23.269
Speaker:
and say this prayer.
148
00:05:25.389 –> 00:05:28.310
Speaker:
Choo choo and literally win.
149
00:05:28.310 –> 00:05:29.910
Speaker:
And I mean everybody’s mouth.
150
00:05:29.910 –> 00:05:33.389
Speaker:
I mean, I mean, it wasn’t, it
was terrifying because it was
151
00:05:33.389 –> 00:05:36.149
Speaker:
like our there were so many
people to where it was like, are
152
00:05:36.149 –> 00:05:38.350
Speaker:
we all seeing this?
153
00:05:38.350 –> 00:05:41.990
Speaker:
Like, I mean, are like hearing
it because there’s no train.
154
00:05:41.990 –> 00:05:46.589
Speaker:
There was no train like the, the
stoplight didn’t across the
155
00:05:46.589 –> 00:05:49.209
Speaker:
road, you know, like, obviously
there’s the stoplight to where
156
00:05:49.209 –> 00:05:50.990
Speaker:
the, the bar comes down.
157
00:05:50.990 –> 00:05:53.029
Speaker:
It didn’t come down.
158
00:05:53.029 –> 00:05:55.990
Speaker:
It was crazy, crazy.
159
00:05:55.990 –> 00:05:59.589
Speaker:
I was probably maybe eleven.
160
00:05:59.589 –> 00:06:01.750
Speaker:
And I mean, it was so exciting
being that young.
161
00:06:01.750 –> 00:06:05.350
Speaker:
And then like, if, if, if it
would have just been us, no one
162
00:06:05.350 –> 00:06:06.069
Speaker:
would have believed it.
163
00:06:06.069 –> 00:06:08.189
Speaker:
But I mean, with so many people,
164
00:06:08.189 –> 00:06:09.910
Speaker:
you just couldn’t deny what just
165
00:06:09.910 –> 00:06:10.709
Speaker:
happened.
166
00:06:10.709 –> 00:06:11.480
Speaker:
Do you know what I mean?
167
00:06:11.480 –> 00:06:16.379
Speaker:
Like it was just shock and awe
and it was and it and it really
168
00:06:16.379 –> 00:06:20.839
Speaker:
teetered the whole night because
after that, I mean, obviously it
169
00:06:20.839 –> 00:06:24.680
Speaker:
lasted as long as the treatment
lasts maybe two, three minutes.
170
00:06:24.680 –> 00:06:29.759
Speaker:
And, and everyone after that,
the excitement, it was like,
171
00:06:29.759 –> 00:06:30.720
Speaker:
what just happened?
172
00:06:30.720 –> 00:06:34.120
Speaker:
You know, you can’t calm kids,
kids down after that, you know,
173
00:06:34.120 –> 00:06:35.360
Speaker:
I mean, we, we shortly left.
174
00:06:35.360 –> 00:06:37.160
Speaker:
So I necessarily don’t think
175
00:06:37.160 –> 00:06:39.399
Speaker:
anyone ever went up or they ever
176
00:06:39.399 –> 00:06:41.519
Speaker:
finished that prayer, which I
177
00:06:41.519 –> 00:06:43.600
Speaker:
mean, if that was the goal of,
178
00:06:43.600 –> 00:06:45.519
Speaker:
you know, the devil, I mean, it
179
00:06:45.519 –> 00:06:48.279
Speaker:
worked because I mean, it just I
180
00:06:48.279 –> 00:06:50.399
Speaker:
mean, it they they didn’t
181
00:06:50.399 –> 00:06:51.279
Speaker:
finish.
182
00:06:51.279 –> 00:06:53.920
Speaker:
I mean, it was just I remember
the pastor was talking about I
183
00:06:53.920 –> 00:06:58.360
Speaker:
mean, the kid, I mean, people
were just so astounded by it.
184
00:06:58.360 –> 00:06:59.720
Speaker:
I mean, like, I remember I was
185
00:06:59.720 –> 00:07:01.680
Speaker:
talking like our, we over the
186
00:07:01.680 –> 00:07:03.360
Speaker:
youth pastor was I was in fifth
187
00:07:03.360 –> 00:07:03.680
Speaker:
grade.
188
00:07:03.680 –> 00:07:07.839
Speaker:
I was with April and, uh, and,
or my friend April.
189
00:07:07.839 –> 00:07:10.800
Speaker:
And I remember like he kept
telling everybody, be quiet.
190
00:07:10.800 –> 00:07:11.759
Speaker:
It was like, come on.
191
00:07:11.759 –> 00:07:13.144
Speaker:
I remember like laughing like,
192
00:07:13.144 –> 00:07:15.129
Speaker:
dude, imaginary train just went
193
00:07:15.129 –> 00:07:15.490
Speaker:
by.
194
00:07:15.490 –> 00:07:17.290
Speaker:
You’d be quiet, you know what I
mean?
195
00:07:17.290 –> 00:07:18.290
Speaker:
Like, kind of joking around
196
00:07:18.290 –> 00:07:20.370
Speaker:
about like, come on, like, like
197
00:07:20.370 –> 00:07:21.610
Speaker:
we’re not going to talk about
198
00:07:21.610 –> 00:07:21.850
Speaker:
it.
199
00:07:21.850 –> 00:07:24.769
Speaker:
Like, and everybody just kept
checking like, even like on the
200
00:07:24.769 –> 00:07:28.970
Speaker:
way I got picked up and I
remember just being that
201
00:07:28.970 –> 00:07:32.610
Speaker:
excited, even talking about on
the way home like it still was.
202
00:07:32.610 –> 00:07:36.230
Speaker:
It definitely like people picked
the chairs up, everyone like who
203
00:07:36.230 –> 00:07:38.889
Speaker:
was closer to the front, like
they moved back.
204
00:07:38.889 –> 00:07:39.970
Speaker:
So I mean, it was just like this
205
00:07:39.970 –> 00:07:42.370
Speaker:
chaos for the whole time it was
206
00:07:42.370 –> 00:07:43.329
Speaker:
going on.
207
00:07:43.329 –> 00:07:47.310
Speaker:
So it was almost like there were
so many people that to where in
208
00:07:47.310 –> 00:07:50.670
Speaker:
youth to where people were just
trying to find the kids if they
209
00:07:50.670 –> 00:07:53.990
Speaker:
walked away or some people, some
people ran up to the front to
210
00:07:53.990 –> 00:07:58.529
Speaker:
see, you know, I mean, we, I was
in the back and I still felt the
211
00:07:58.529 –> 00:08:01.769
Speaker:
wind and it was just as loud as
it would have been a train.
212
00:08:01.769 –> 00:08:03.689
Speaker:
And us sitting in a field next
to it.
213
00:08:05.089 –> 00:08:09.370
Speaker:
I’ve never had any experiences
with a phantom train or anything
214
00:08:09.370 –> 00:08:11.689
Speaker:
along those lines, and I haven’t
really heard a whole lot about
215
00:08:11.689 –> 00:08:14.209
Speaker:
that whole phenomenon.
216
00:08:14.209 –> 00:08:15.750
Speaker:
I did a little research and
217
00:08:15.750 –> 00:08:17.829
Speaker:
found that there are some famous
218
00:08:17.829 –> 00:08:20.550
Speaker:
instances of phantom trains, for
219
00:08:20.550 –> 00:08:22.910
Speaker:
instance, the Lincoln’s Funeral
220
00:08:22.910 –> 00:08:24.550
Speaker:
Train.
221
00:08:24.550 –> 00:08:27.670
Speaker:
Apparently it’s said to run
regularly from Washington, D.C.
222
00:08:27.670 –> 00:08:30.550
Speaker:
to Springfield, Illinois, around
the time of the anniversary of
223
00:08:30.550 –> 00:08:32.629
Speaker:
Abraham Lincoln’s death.
224
00:08:32.629 –> 00:08:35.149
Speaker:
And apparently it stops,
watches, and clocks in
225
00:08:35.149 –> 00:08:37.629
Speaker:
surrounding areas as it passes.
226
00:08:37.629 –> 00:08:41.090
Speaker:
And there are apparently other
various stories across the, the
227
00:08:41.090 –> 00:08:44.669
Speaker:
world actually, um, regarding
these phantom trains.
228
00:08:44.669 –> 00:08:46.830
Speaker:
So I don’t know what to think of
this.
229
00:08:46.830 –> 00:08:51.309
Speaker:
Um, have you ever had any
experience with a phantom train?

By Tim Binnall
In a spooky story out of England, a pair of police officers say that they heard a ‘phantom train’ pass their station where they later learned that a railway had once existed long ago. According to a local media report, the eerie incident occurred last week in the town of Swadlincote as constables Joe Stafford and Whitney Holmes-Small were set to commence their work patrolling the community. To their profound surprise, the duo suddenly heard the unmistakable sound of locomotive approaching the police station. As the noise grew closer, their confusion was compounded when leaves on nearby trees began to sway and the air felt like it was being moved by an unseen force.
Amazingly, the pair claim that the noise from the proverbial ‘ghost train’ went right past the station and, as the sound appeared to fade into the distance, the phantom locomotive even tooted its horn. Understandably bewildered by what they experienced, they looked into the history of the building and discovered that there had once been a railway that ran right next to the site. Remarkably, rather than keep the strange story a secret within their ranks, the Swadlincote Police Department actually shared the officers’ account on social media and asked if anyone else had previously encountered the phantom train, which would seem to suggest that the tale was a genuine report of ghostly activity on the part of the two cops.
