Speaker:
Thank you for joining me.

22
00:00:48.399 –> 00:00:50.640
Speaker:
Hope you enjoy the show.

23
00:00:50.640 –> 00:00:54.079
Speaker:
Our first episode takes us to
the west side of Mount Vernon,

24
00:00:54.079 –> 00:00:56.640
Speaker:
Indiana, just outside of town.

25
00:00:56.640 –> 00:00:58.119
Speaker:
Right off the highway sits a

26
00:00:58.119 –> 00:00:59.670
Speaker:
little motel called the Four

27
00:00:59.670 –> 00:01:01.009
Speaker:
Seasons.

28
00:01:01.009 –> 00:01:03.890
Speaker:
It’s easy to miss if you’re
flying down the highway there,

29
00:01:03.890 –> 00:01:06.930
Speaker:
but it’s it’s set off the
highway there for a long time,

30
00:01:06.930 –> 00:01:12.170
Speaker:
and it’s run by Rodney Cox and
his mother, Jean Rodney, and his

31
00:01:12.170 –> 00:01:16.049
Speaker:
mother actually run the motel
today, and they also ran it

32
00:01:16.049 –> 00:01:19.250
Speaker:
together back in the fall of
nineteen ninety four, which is

33
00:01:19.250 –> 00:01:21.689
Speaker:
when our story begins.

34
00:01:21.689 –> 00:01:25.010
Speaker:
The motel business certainly has
its challenges, as Rodney and

35
00:01:25.010 –> 00:01:26.489
Speaker:
Jean found out.

36
00:01:26.489 –> 00:01:27.790
Speaker:
Now, they were no strangers to

37
00:01:27.790 –> 00:01:29.370
Speaker:
dealing with issues that

38
00:01:29.370 –> 00:01:31.370
Speaker:
standard motel owners would deal

39
00:01:31.370 –> 00:01:33.790
Speaker:
with leaky toilets, guests

40
00:01:33.790 –> 00:01:35.650
Speaker:
losing their room keys, noise

41
00:01:35.650 –> 00:01:36.930
Speaker:
complaints, things of that

42
00:01:36.930 –> 00:01:38.329
Speaker:
nature.

43
00:01:38.329 –> 00:01:39.650
Speaker:
In the fall of nineteen ninety

44
00:01:39.650 –> 00:01:43.150
Speaker:
four, Rodney and Jean began to

45
00:01:43.150 –> 00:01:45.290
Speaker:
hear familiar complaints coming

46
00:01:45.290 –> 00:01:47.370
Speaker:
from one particular room at the

47
00:01:47.370 –> 00:01:48.489
Speaker:
motel.

48
00:01:48.489 –> 00:01:53.849
Speaker:
At first, they kind of brushed
it off as being odd, but guest

49
00:01:53.849 –> 00:01:58.500
Speaker:
after guest night after night It
came to them with similar

50
00:01:58.500 –> 00:02:03.859
Speaker:
complaints, and Rodney and Jean
could no longer brush it off as

51
00:02:03.859 –> 00:02:06.780
Speaker:
being quirky or strange.

52
00:02:06.780 –> 00:02:09.379
Speaker:
They knew they had to deal with
it.

53
00:02:09.379 –> 00:02:14.159
Speaker:
And this particular issue, they
couldn’t just call in a plumber

54
00:02:14.159 –> 00:02:19.919
Speaker:
or a roofer, or somebody from
maintenance or housekeeping to

55
00:02:19.919 –> 00:02:23.620
Speaker:
deal with this, Rodney and Jean
had to put their heads together

56
00:02:23.620 –> 00:02:27.699
Speaker:
and come up with a game plan on
how to deal with this issue.

57
00:02:27.699 –> 00:02:29.219
Speaker:
So Rodney and Jean placed a

58
00:02:29.219 –> 00:02:30.659
Speaker:
phone call to the only person

59
00:02:30.659 –> 00:02:31.979
Speaker:
they knew who might be able to

60
00:02:31.979 –> 00:02:33.500
Speaker:
help.

61
00:02:33.500 –> 00:02:36.580
Speaker:
In the first episode of River
City Mystery Podcast.

62
00:02:36.580 –> 00:02:38.020
Speaker:
You’re going to learn why Rodney

63
00:02:38.020 –> 00:02:40.620
Speaker:
and Jean resorted to calling a

64
00:02:40.620 –> 00:02:41.500
Speaker:
preacher.

65
00:02:48.780 –> 00:02:50.939
Speaker:
Now, before we get into why the

66
00:02:50.939 –> 00:02:53.379
Speaker:
preacher was called to deal with

67
00:02:53.379 –> 00:02:55.469
Speaker:
the issue at the motel, I need

68
00:02:55.469 –> 00:02:57.490
Speaker:
to back up a little bit and kind

69
00:02:57.490 –> 00:02:58.949
Speaker:
of set the stage and give some

70
00:02:58.949 –> 00:03:01.169
Speaker:
context into what was going on

71
00:03:01.169 –> 00:03:02.430
Speaker:
there.

72
00:03:02.430 –> 00:03:03.990
Speaker:
On September two, nineteen

73
00:03:03.990 –> 00:03:06.069
Speaker:
ninety four, about a month or so

74
00:03:06.069 –> 00:03:07.469
Speaker:
before the preacher had been

75
00:03:07.469 –> 00:03:09.590
Speaker:
called out to the motel, Jack

76
00:03:09.590 –> 00:03:11.789
Speaker:
Barnett was with his girlfriend,

77
00:03:11.789 –> 00:03:13.870
Speaker:
Terri Rideout, at American

78
00:03:13.870 –> 00:03:16.069
Speaker:
Legion Post forty four in

79
00:03:16.069 –> 00:03:17.590
Speaker:
Newburgh, Indiana.

80
00:03:17.590 –> 00:03:19.110
Speaker:
They had stopped by the post to

81
00:03:19.110 –> 00:03:20.810
Speaker:
grab a quick bite to eat before

82
00:03:20.810 –> 00:03:22.389
Speaker:
Terry’s shift started that

83
00:03:22.389 –> 00:03:23.909
Speaker:
morning at eleven o’clock at

84
00:03:23.909 –> 00:03:25.469
Speaker:
Burger King on Main Street in

85
00:03:25.469 –> 00:03:26.629
Speaker:
Evansville.

86
00:03:26.629 –> 00:03:30.370
Speaker:
Now, as far as anyone can tell,
um, everyone who was close to

87
00:03:30.370 –> 00:03:33.909
Speaker:
Jack and Terry said that they
had a great relationship, and

88
00:03:33.909 –> 00:03:36.870
Speaker:
there was even talk that they
were going to get married.

89
00:03:36.870 –> 00:03:40.150
Speaker:
They’d been living together for
the last three months at a home

90
00:03:40.150 –> 00:03:43.969
Speaker:
in Chandler, Indiana, and Jack
and Terry enjoyed going to

91
00:03:43.969 –> 00:03:46.349
Speaker:
Jack’s River camp.

92
00:03:46.349 –> 00:03:48.930
Speaker:
Uh, they both really enjoyed
going down to the river and

93
00:03:48.930 –> 00:03:50.469
Speaker:
having fun down there.

94
00:03:50.469 –> 00:03:52.949
Speaker:
And that was kind of their thing
that they did together.

95
00:03:53.960 –> 00:03:55.639
Speaker:
Terry loved the river so much.

96
00:03:55.639 –> 00:04:00.719
Speaker:
She named her dog River, and her
dog often trailed her wherever

97
00:04:00.719 –> 00:04:04.439
Speaker:
she went, including to the river
or pretty much anywhere.

98
00:04:04.439 –> 00:04:06.319
Speaker:
So it wasn’t too unusual.

99
00:04:06.319 –> 00:04:11.039
Speaker:
You’d find Jack, Terry and River
hanging out at the river camp.

100
00:04:11.039 –> 00:04:12.580
Speaker:
Now, I mentioned that Terry

101
00:04:12.580 –> 00:04:14.319
Speaker:
worked at Burger King, and she

102
00:04:14.319 –> 00:04:16.480
Speaker:
had that shift at eleven o’clock

103
00:04:16.480 –> 00:04:17.879
Speaker:
that morning.

104
00:04:17.879 –> 00:04:20.600
Speaker:
She’d only been working there
for about a month at this point.

105
00:04:20.600 –> 00:04:24.680
Speaker:
And according to her district
manager, Connie Weinzapfel, she

106
00:04:24.680 –> 00:04:26.240
Speaker:
was doing a really good job.

107
00:04:26.240 –> 00:04:31.480
Speaker:
And she called her a very
intelligent, responsible woman.

108
00:04:31.480 –> 00:04:33.439
Speaker:
So she was, you know, doing a

109
00:04:33.439 –> 00:04:34.740
Speaker:
good job there and nothing

110
00:04:34.740 –> 00:04:35.839
Speaker:
unusual.

111
00:04:35.839 –> 00:04:39.160
Speaker:
Jack Barnett was an employee at
Sejko.

112
00:04:39.160 –> 00:04:42.480
Speaker:
Southern Indiana Gas and
Electric Company, and Jack was

113
00:04:42.480 –> 00:04:45.120
Speaker:
an equipment operator for Sejko.

114
00:04:45.120 –> 00:04:48.360
Speaker:
Now, Jack Jack had had a rough
couple of years.

115
00:04:48.360 –> 00:04:50.240
Speaker:
He was divorced about three

116
00:04:50.240 –> 00:04:52.600
Speaker:
years prior, he was married to

117
00:04:52.600 –> 00:04:53.819
Speaker:
Julie Waters.

118
00:04:53.819 –> 00:04:56.939
Speaker:
And, um, they maintained at that

119
00:04:56.939 –> 00:04:58.899
Speaker:
point a, a friendly

120
00:04:58.899 –> 00:04:59.980
Speaker:
relationship.

121
00:04:59.980 –> 00:05:03.660
Speaker:
And they also had a thirteen
year old daughter together.

122
00:05:03.660 –> 00:05:05.180
Speaker:
Now, another reason that, uh,

123
00:05:05.180 –> 00:05:06.819
Speaker:
Jack had had a rough couple of

124
00:05:06.819 –> 00:05:08.860
Speaker:
years was in September of

125
00:05:08.860 –> 00:05:09.740
Speaker:
nineteen ninety.

126
00:05:09.740 –> 00:05:12.860
Speaker:
He was charged with battery with
a deadly weapon.

127
00:05:12.860 –> 00:05:15.259
Speaker:
He pled guilty on the charge and

128
00:05:15.259 –> 00:05:17.639
Speaker:
did avoid serving serious jail

129
00:05:17.639 –> 00:05:18.420
Speaker:
time.

130
00:05:18.420 –> 00:05:22.060
Speaker:
But he did have to serve several
years on probation.

131
00:05:22.060 –> 00:05:23.980
Speaker:
So that probationary period had

132
00:05:23.980 –> 00:05:26.740
Speaker:
just come to an end, uh, by this

133
00:05:26.740 –> 00:05:27.579
Speaker:
point.

134
00:05:27.579 –> 00:05:29.060
Speaker:
So from an observer’s point of

135
00:05:29.060 –> 00:05:31.339
Speaker:
view, things seem to be headed

136
00:05:31.339 –> 00:05:33.019
Speaker:
in the right direction for Terry

137
00:05:33.019 –> 00:05:34.180
Speaker:
and Jack.

138
00:05:34.180 –> 00:05:38.420
Speaker:
Now, Terry’s car was having some
mechanical problems, so she was

139
00:05:38.420 –> 00:05:41.259
Speaker:
kind of relying on Jack to give
her a ride.

140
00:05:41.259 –> 00:05:42.620
Speaker:
So about ten thirty that

141
00:05:42.620 –> 00:05:44.699
Speaker:
morning, they left the American

142
00:05:44.699 –> 00:05:46.120
Speaker:
Legion and started to head

143
00:05:46.120 –> 00:05:48.100
Speaker:
towards Burger King on Main

144
00:05:48.100 –> 00:05:49.910
Speaker:
Street in Evansville so that

145
00:05:49.910 –> 00:05:51.550
Speaker:
Terry could be at her eleven a m

146
00:05:51.550 –> 00:05:52.430
Speaker:
shift.

147
00:05:52.430 –> 00:05:57.230
Speaker:
They, um, she made it there on
time and worked the entire

148
00:05:57.230 –> 00:05:59.790
Speaker:
shift, eleven to seven.

149
00:05:59.790 –> 00:06:03.850
Speaker:
Around seven o’clock, her
manager asked her if she would,

150
00:06:03.850 –> 00:06:07.509
Speaker:
uh, on the night deposit to
Citizens National Bank.

151
00:06:07.509 –> 00:06:09.110
Speaker:
And she did that.

152
00:06:09.110 –> 00:06:10.970
Speaker:
So according to her coworkers,

153
00:06:10.970 –> 00:06:12.910
Speaker:
Terry had told them, uh, see you

154
00:06:12.910 –> 00:06:13.310
Speaker:
tomorrow.

155
00:06:13.310 –> 00:06:15.110
Speaker:
And she was in a good mood.

156
00:06:15.110 –> 00:06:17.889
Speaker:
And the last they saw was Terry

157
00:06:17.889 –> 00:06:20.370
Speaker:
driving off in Jack’s red pickup

158
00:06:20.370 –> 00:06:21.310
Speaker:
truck.

159
00:06:21.310 –> 00:06:25.389
Speaker:
A few days later, on September
six, nineteen ninety four, Jack

160
00:06:25.389 –> 00:06:30.110
Speaker:
was spotted at Don and Donna’s
Sports Bar in Newburgh, Indiana.

161
00:06:30.110 –> 00:06:35.709
Speaker:
Gail Chapman, a, uh, an employee
of Don and Donna’s who also

162
00:06:35.709 –> 00:06:39.269
Speaker:
happened to be a good friend of
Terry’s and also a former

163
00:06:39.269 –> 00:06:42.709
Speaker:
roommate of hers, had talked to
the bartender who was working on

164
00:06:42.709 –> 00:06:48.319
Speaker:
September sixth and confirmed
that Jack was there by himself.

165
00:06:48.319 –> 00:06:51.759
Speaker:
But even though it was a little
odd that Jack was there by

166
00:06:51.759 –> 00:06:56.160
Speaker:
himself that day, according to
the bartender, he wasn’t acting

167
00:06:56.160 –> 00:06:57.240
Speaker:
strange or odd.

168
00:06:57.240 –> 00:06:57.879
Speaker:
He didn’t.

169
00:06:57.879 –> 00:06:59.220
Speaker:
He didn’t mention anything about

170
00:06:59.220 –> 00:07:01.680
Speaker:
Terry or why he was there by

171
00:07:01.680 –> 00:07:02.240
Speaker:
himself.

172
00:07:02.240 –> 00:07:05.879
Speaker:
So it didn’t really raise any
red flags with anyone.

173
00:07:15.680 –> 00:07:20.040
Speaker:
Three days later, on September
nine, nineteen ninety four, Jack

174
00:07:20.040 –> 00:07:23.800
Speaker:
Barnett pulled into the parking
lot of the Four Seasons Motel in

175
00:07:23.800 –> 00:07:25.879
Speaker:
Mount Vernon, Indiana.

176
00:07:25.879 –> 00:07:27.959
Speaker:
Jack had brought two items with
him.

177
00:07:29.160 –> 00:07:31.360
Speaker:
One was the movie Falling Down,

178
00:07:31.360 –> 00:07:34.240
Speaker:
starring Michael Douglas and

179
00:07:34.240 –> 00:07:35.399
Speaker:
two.

180
00:07:35.399 –> 00:07:36.439
Speaker:
His gun.

181
00:07:40.680 –> 00:07:42.319
Speaker:
Jack walked into the lobby of

182
00:07:42.319 –> 00:07:43.800
Speaker:
the motel and asked if they had

183
00:07:43.800 –> 00:07:45.000
Speaker:
any vacancies.

184
00:07:45.000 –> 00:07:46.649
Speaker:
They did.

185
00:07:46.649 –> 00:07:49.569
Speaker:
He purchased his room for the
evening, signed off on the

186
00:07:49.569 –> 00:07:53.529
Speaker:
paperwork, grabbed his key and
headed down to his room.

187
00:07:54.850 –> 00:08:00.089
Speaker:
Jack walked down to his motel
room, unlocked the door, walked

188
00:08:00.089 –> 00:08:03.449
Speaker:
in, making sure to have his two
items with him.

189
00:08:04.449 –> 00:08:06.610
Speaker:
Shut the door behind him, locked

190
00:08:06.610 –> 00:08:09.250
Speaker:
it, and also locked the security

191
00:08:09.250 –> 00:08:10.129
Speaker:
chain.

192
00:08:12.290 –> 00:08:16.649
Speaker:
At some point that evening, Jack
walked up to the VCR in his

193
00:08:16.649 –> 00:08:23.370
Speaker:
room, inserted the VHS tape of
the movie, falling down, and

194
00:08:23.370 –> 00:08:24.490
Speaker:
watched the movie.

195
00:08:26.170 –> 00:08:30.209
Speaker:
If you’re not familiar with the
movie Falling Down, it came out

196
00:08:30.209 –> 00:08:35.450
Speaker:
in nineteen ninety three, which
is about a year before this

197
00:08:35.450 –> 00:08:38.049
Speaker:
story takes place.

198
00:08:38.049 –> 00:08:44.220
Speaker:
It stars Michael Douglas, who’s
a unemployed defense contractor

199
00:08:44.220 –> 00:08:50.740
Speaker:
who’s divorced and just having a
really bad day.

200
00:08:50.740 –> 00:08:53.379
Speaker:
He’s stuck in traffic.

201
00:08:53.379 –> 00:08:58.860
Speaker:
I think it’s in Los Angeles and
just everything goes wrong.

202
00:08:58.860 –> 00:09:02.379
Speaker:
And he just he literally snaps.

203
00:09:02.379 –> 00:09:08.019
Speaker:
So he basically arms himself,
just parks his car on the

204
00:09:08.019 –> 00:09:11.779
Speaker:
freeway, and then just kind of
goes on a bit of a rampage

205
00:09:11.779 –> 00:09:14.419
Speaker:
against society in general.

206
00:09:14.419 –> 00:09:20.379
Speaker:
Um, but basically it’s a guy
that just kind of snaps up who

207
00:09:20.379 –> 00:09:22.980
Speaker:
is kind of living a normal life.

208
00:09:22.980 –> 00:09:26.860
Speaker:
No one suspected that he would
have done this.

209
00:09:26.860 –> 00:09:32.379
Speaker:
And, um, so that’s, that’s the
movie that Jack took with him.

210
00:09:32.379 –> 00:09:33.059
Speaker:
That’s the movie.

211
00:09:33.059 –> 00:09:38.539
Speaker:
That’s the last movie he watched
that night falling down.

212
00:09:38.539 –> 00:09:40.500
Speaker:
When the movie ended, Jack

213
00:09:40.500 –> 00:09:42.909
Speaker:
walked over to the desk, sat

214
00:09:42.909 –> 00:09:45.269
Speaker:
down, grabbed a piece of paper

215
00:09:45.269 –> 00:09:48.309
Speaker:
and a pen, and wrote out a

216
00:09:48.309 –> 00:09:49.850
Speaker:
little note to his thirteen year

217
00:09:49.850 –> 00:09:51.230
Speaker:
old daughter.

218
00:09:51.230 –> 00:09:55.149
Speaker:
He said something along the
lines of grow up to be a good

219
00:09:55.149 –> 00:09:58.309
Speaker:
girl and I love you.

220
00:09:58.309 –> 00:10:01.429
Speaker:
Then Jack got up and walked
across the room to grab the

221
00:10:01.429 –> 00:10:05.070
Speaker:
second item that he had brought
with him the gun.

222
00:10:06.350 –> 00:10:09.730
Speaker:
He grabbed it, opened his mouth,

223
00:10:09.730 –> 00:10:13.389
Speaker:
inserted the gun, and pulled the

224
00:10:13.389 –> 00:10:14.230
Speaker:
trigger.

225
00:10:16.309 –> 00:10:19.509
Speaker:
According to the death
certificate, he died from a

226
00:10:19.509 –> 00:10:23.309
Speaker:
self-inflicted gunshot wound
through the roof of the mouth.

227
00:10:23.309 –> 00:10:27.230
Speaker:
The next day, September tenth,
nineteen ninety four, hotel

228
00:10:27.230 –> 00:10:32.470
Speaker:
workers noticed that he still
hadn’t checked out of the motel.

229
00:10:32.470 –> 00:10:34.950
Speaker:
As of four thirty, and there was

230
00:10:34.950 –> 00:10:36.870
Speaker:
a Do Not Disturb sign hanging on

231
00:10:36.870 –> 00:10:38.509
Speaker:
his doorknob.

232
00:10:38.509 –> 00:10:41.200
Speaker:
So after trying to, uh, knock on

233
00:10:41.200 –> 00:10:43.320
Speaker:
the door and wake him up, the

234
00:10:43.320 –> 00:10:46.240
Speaker:
hotel staff went to go get a key

235
00:10:46.240 –> 00:10:49.159
Speaker:
and they were able to partially

236
00:10:49.159 –> 00:10:50.960
Speaker:
open the door, but when they

237
00:10:50.960 –> 00:10:52.080
Speaker:
did, they saw that there was

238
00:10:52.080 –> 00:10:54.759
Speaker:
blood all over the floor, and

239
00:10:54.759 –> 00:10:55.919
Speaker:
they immediately called the

240
00:10:55.919 –> 00:10:57.360
Speaker:
sheriff.

241
00:10:57.360 –> 00:11:01.720
Speaker:
So the Posey County Sheriff at
the time, Bill Cox, came out,

242
00:11:01.720 –> 00:11:06.460
Speaker:
and he says that he’s convinced
that it was a suicide, that, um,

243
00:11:06.460 –> 00:11:11.399
Speaker:
Jack did end his own life, uh,
based on the fact that the motel

244
00:11:11.399 –> 00:11:15.120
Speaker:
door was locked from the inside
with the chain.

245
00:11:15.120 –> 00:11:17.960
Speaker:
So no one else could have could
have done that.

246
00:11:17.960 –> 00:11:21.440
Speaker:
But, Jack, several days later,

247
00:11:21.440 –> 00:11:22.940
Speaker:
family and friends gathered to

248
00:11:22.940 –> 00:11:24.399
Speaker:
remember the life of Jack

249
00:11:24.399 –> 00:11:25.799
Speaker:
Barnett.

250
00:11:25.799 –> 00:11:29.240
Speaker:
But they weren’t the only ones
at Jack’s funeral.

251
00:11:29.240 –> 00:11:32.799
Speaker:
Hidden in the back were
investigators.

252
00:11:32.799 –> 00:11:35.639
Speaker:
They weren’t investigating
Jack’s death.

253
00:11:35.639 –> 00:11:39.490
Speaker:
They were investigating the
disappearance of Terry Rideout.

254
00:11:39.490 –> 00:11:42.529
Speaker:
Jack’s girlfriend, Terry, hadn’t

255
00:11:42.529 –> 00:11:43.850
Speaker:
been seen since she left her

256
00:11:43.850 –> 00:11:45.610
Speaker:
shift at Burger King that night,

257
00:11:45.610 –> 00:11:47.110
Speaker:
September two, nineteen ninety

258
00:11:47.110 –> 00:11:48.490
Speaker:
four.

259
00:11:48.490 –> 00:11:50.250
Speaker:
The hope was that if she was

260
00:11:50.250 –> 00:11:51.610
Speaker:
okay, she would have attended

261
00:11:51.610 –> 00:11:52.730
Speaker:
Jack’s funeral.

262
00:11:52.730 –> 00:11:55.169
Speaker:
That’s what everybody said she
would have done.

263
00:11:55.169 –> 00:11:56.289
Speaker:
But she didn’t.

264
00:11:56.289 –> 00:11:58.250
Speaker:
She never showed up.

265
00:11:58.250 –> 00:12:04.450
Speaker:
As a matter of fact, she was
never seen or heard from again.

266
00:12:04.450 –> 00:12:07.649
Speaker:
Friends and acquaintances
searched the house of Terry and

267
00:12:07.649 –> 00:12:12.049
Speaker:
Jack to look for clues as to
what may have happened to Terry.

268
00:12:12.049 –> 00:12:13.289
Speaker:
The only unusual thing they

269
00:12:13.289 –> 00:12:14.809
Speaker:
found at the house was the fact

270
00:12:14.809 –> 00:12:17.210
Speaker:
that River Terry’s dog was

271
00:12:17.210 –> 00:12:18.769
Speaker:
missing.

272
00:12:18.769 –> 00:12:20.909
Speaker:
It’s believed that most likely

273
00:12:20.909 –> 00:12:22.490
Speaker:
Terry and River met similar

274
00:12:22.490 –> 00:12:23.809
Speaker:
fates.

275
00:12:23.809 –> 00:12:27.009
Speaker:
But we don’t know, and we may
never know.

276
00:12:28.610 –> 00:12:32.889
Speaker:
As of today, Teresa Rideout
still remains a missing persons

277
00:12:32.889 –> 00:12:34.850
Speaker:
case in the state of Indiana.

278
00:12:35.899 –> 00:12:38.659
Speaker:
By now, you’re probably
wondering how this ties in with

279
00:12:38.659 –> 00:12:42.220
Speaker:
the fact that a preacher was
called in to deal with some

280
00:12:42.220 –> 00:12:46.700
Speaker:
issues at the motel about a
month after Jack’s death.

281
00:12:46.700 –> 00:12:48.580
Speaker:
Well, as it turns out, after

282
00:12:48.580 –> 00:12:51.340
Speaker:
Jack died, the room he was in

283
00:12:51.340 –> 00:12:53.340
Speaker:
became a bit of a hotspot for

284
00:12:53.340 –> 00:12:55.500
Speaker:
paranormal activity.

285
00:12:55.500 –> 00:13:00.460
Speaker:
At first, Rodney Cox and his
mother, Jean, kind of laughed it

286
00:13:00.460 –> 00:13:05.659
Speaker:
off as being, you know, strange
and probably coincidental.

287
00:13:10.019 –> 00:13:12.899
Speaker:
Guests were consistently saying

288
00:13:12.899 –> 00:13:15.580
Speaker:
that the TV was turning on by

289
00:13:15.580 –> 00:13:18.340
Speaker:
itself exactly at ten p m every

290
00:13:18.340 –> 00:13:24.899
Speaker:
night, and Rodney got a little

291
00:13:24.899 –> 00:13:25.460
Speaker:
irritated.

292
00:13:25.460 –> 00:13:26.460
Speaker:
So he would.

293
00:13:26.460 –> 00:13:31.039
Speaker:
He would go to the room and, uh,
fix the TV and, you know, jiggle

294
00:13:31.039 –> 00:13:35.750
Speaker:
the wires or whatever he was
doing To appease the, the guests

295
00:13:35.750 –> 00:13:39.230
Speaker:
and um, they’d check out the
next day and a new guest would

296
00:13:39.230 –> 00:13:43.190
Speaker:
come in and they would have a
similar complaint the next day.

297
00:13:43.190 –> 00:13:48.190
Speaker:
Hey, the TV keeps coming on at
ten p m and I can’t sleep.

298
00:13:48.190 –> 00:13:49.029
Speaker:
What’s going on here?

299
00:13:49.029 –> 00:13:49.970
Speaker:
There’s some electrical

300
00:13:49.970 –> 00:13:51.590
Speaker:
electrical problem or something

301
00:13:51.590 –> 00:13:52.710
Speaker:
like that.

302
00:13:52.710 –> 00:13:55.230
Speaker:
So, Rodney, it started being

303
00:13:55.230 –> 00:13:57.429
Speaker:
less funny and a little more

304
00:13:57.429 –> 00:13:58.710
Speaker:
concerning.

305
00:13:58.710 –> 00:14:01.070
Speaker:
So Rodney started bringing in
new TVs.

306
00:14:01.070 –> 00:14:04.750
Speaker:
He took out the old TV in that
room and would bring in a new

307
00:14:04.750 –> 00:14:09.830
Speaker:
one, plug it in, get it all set
up, and another guest would come

308
00:14:09.830 –> 00:14:12.830
Speaker:
in and same, same concerns.

309
00:14:12.830 –> 00:14:18.909
Speaker:
Ten o’clock TV would turn on and
it was freaking some guests out

310
00:14:18.909 –> 00:14:19.789
Speaker:
so much that they.

311
00:14:19.789 –> 00:14:21.149
Speaker:
They actually told Rodney and

312
00:14:21.149 –> 00:14:23.730
Speaker:
Jean, hey, this, this room is

313
00:14:23.730 –> 00:14:24.230
Speaker:
haunted.

314
00:14:24.230 –> 00:14:26.789
Speaker:
There’s something not right
about this room.

315
00:14:26.789 –> 00:14:29.269
Speaker:
You need to do something about
it.

316
00:14:29.269 –> 00:14:31.970
Speaker:
And of course, Rodney and Jean

317
00:14:31.970 –> 00:14:33.730
Speaker:
hadn’t advertised that that room

318
00:14:33.730 –> 00:14:35.610
Speaker:
was where someone had killed

319
00:14:35.610 –> 00:14:36.970
Speaker:
themselves within the past

320
00:14:36.970 –> 00:14:37.330
Speaker:
month.

321
00:14:37.330 –> 00:14:41.570
Speaker:
So there’s really no way that
anyone would know that, or that

322
00:14:41.570 –> 00:14:45.009
Speaker:
they would have known that other
guests had had similar issues.

323
00:14:45.009 –> 00:14:46.929
Speaker:
So from Rodney and Jean’s

324
00:14:46.929 –> 00:14:50.049
Speaker:
perspective, these concerns were

325
00:14:50.049 –> 00:14:52.289
Speaker:
pretty valid because the guests

326
00:14:52.289 –> 00:14:53.809
Speaker:
had no contact with each other

327
00:14:53.809 –> 00:14:55.009
Speaker:
and they were all saying very

328
00:14:55.009 –> 00:14:57.210
Speaker:
similar things.

329
00:14:57.210 –> 00:15:03.450
Speaker:
So Rodney and Jean ended up
having to call help from the

330
00:15:03.450 –> 00:15:07.210
Speaker:
church to deal with this issue.

331
00:15:07.210 –> 00:15:13.409
Speaker:
So they called in the preacher
who actually did arrive and did

332
00:15:13.409 –> 00:15:18.210
Speaker:
a cleansing of the room and
asked for the spirit of Jack

333
00:15:18.210 –> 00:15:24.210
Speaker:
Barnett to leave, to remove
himself from the room.

334
00:15:24.210 –> 00:15:30.179
Speaker:
And after that cleansing, Rodney
and Jean report that there were

335
00:15:30.179 –> 00:15:34.659
Speaker:
no more issues and complaints
about the TV turning on, or

336
00:15:34.659 –> 00:15:37.740
Speaker:
anything else paranormal going
on in that room.

337
00:15:37.740 –> 00:15:42.299
Speaker:
So I guess we can say that the
Four Seasons Motel was a haunted

338
00:15:42.299 –> 00:15:45.379
Speaker:
motel, but is no longer.

339
00:15:45.379 –> 00:15:50.139
Speaker:
Whether or not we believe that
these events are actual

340
00:15:50.139 –> 00:15:56.240
Speaker:
paranormal events where there’s
some sort of spirit activity

341
00:15:56.240 –> 00:16:00.500
Speaker:
going on due to the due to a
traumatic death in the room.

342
00:16:00.500 –> 00:16:05.899
Speaker:
Um, that’s up to you to decide
what you believe about that.

343
00:16:05.899 –> 00:16:08.620
Speaker:
Um, I find it interesting no

344
00:16:08.620 –> 00:16:10.139
Speaker:
matter what, whether or not it’s

345
00:16:10.139 –> 00:16:12.139
Speaker:
a haunting or if it’s merely a

346
00:16:12.139 –> 00:16:13.179
Speaker:
coincidence.

347
00:16:13.179 –> 00:16:15.820
Speaker:
It’s pretty amazing either way.

348
00:16:15.820 –> 00:16:19.940
Speaker:
Um, I think it’s important to
have an open mind about these

349
00:16:19.940 –> 00:16:21.179
Speaker:
sorts of things.

350
00:16:21.179 –> 00:16:24.320
Speaker:
And, um, that’s what I intend to

351
00:16:24.320 –> 00:16:27.684
Speaker:
do with the podcast is to

352
00:16:27.684 –> 00:16:32.110
Speaker:
present mysteries of, uh, of all

353
00:16:32.110 –> 00:16:32.909
Speaker:
types.

354
00:16:32.909 –> 00:16:35.830
Speaker:
And I’ll do that with an open
mind.

355
00:16:35.830 –> 00:16:38.990
Speaker:
Um, and I’m going to let you
decide what you think.

356
00:16:38.990 –> 00:16:41.789
Speaker:
And, um, you can share your

357
00:16:41.789 –> 00:16:44.549
Speaker:
thoughts at my, um, website,

358
00:16:44.549 –> 00:16:46.110
Speaker:
which is RiverCityMystery.

359
00:16:46.110 –> 00:16:46.750
Speaker:
com.

360
00:16:46.750 –> 00:16:51.190
Speaker:
I’ve actually set up a forum I
call the study.

361
00:16:51.190 –> 00:16:55.830
Speaker:
So each episode is going to have
its own forum heading there.

362
00:16:55.830 –> 00:16:57.669
Speaker:
So we’ll see how that goes.

363
00:16:57.669 –> 00:17:00.809
Speaker:
Uh, I’ve also got Facebook and
Instagram set up, but I kind of

364
00:17:00.809 –> 00:17:03.830
Speaker:
just want to base everything off
of my website if possible.

365
00:17:03.830 –> 00:17:05.549
Speaker:
So we’ll see how it goes.

366
00:17:05.549 –> 00:17:08.390
Speaker:
I’m also not sure yet how often

367
00:17:08.390 –> 00:17:09.430
Speaker:
I’m going to be releasing

368
00:17:09.430 –> 00:17:10.549
Speaker:
episodes.

369
00:17:10.549 –> 00:17:14.470
Speaker:
I do work full time, so this is
a hobby.

370
00:17:14.470 –> 00:17:17.630
Speaker:
I will never do this to make
money or anything like that.

371
00:17:17.630 –> 00:17:20.150
Speaker:
So it’s not going to be a, um, a

372
00:17:20.150 –> 00:17:21.750
Speaker:
money making venture or anything

373
00:17:21.750 –> 00:17:22.069
Speaker:
like that.

374
00:17:22.069 –> 00:17:23.549
Speaker:
This is just totally one hundred

375
00:17:23.549 –> 00:17:26.160
Speaker:
percent a, a hobby of mine I

376
00:17:26.160 –> 00:17:26.440
Speaker:
love.

377
00:17:26.440 –> 00:17:29.839
Speaker:
I’ve always loved mysteries and

378
00:17:29.839 –> 00:17:31.640
Speaker:
paranormal things and stuff like

379
00:17:31.640 –> 00:17:31.960
Speaker:
that.

380
00:17:31.960 –> 00:17:35.839
Speaker:
So the idea of being able to
kind of dig in to local

381
00:17:35.839 –> 00:17:40.880
Speaker:
mysteries and paranormal stuff
is just really fun to me.

382
00:17:40.880 –> 00:17:42.559
Speaker:
Uh, it’s just I’m not quite sure

383
00:17:42.559 –> 00:17:44.099
Speaker:
yet how the scheduling is going

384
00:17:44.099 –> 00:17:44.519
Speaker:
to work.

385
00:17:44.519 –> 00:17:46.000
Speaker:
So I hopefully we’ll be able to

386
00:17:46.000 –> 00:17:47.119
Speaker:
have some sort of regular

387
00:17:47.119 –> 00:17:48.440
Speaker:
schedule.

388
00:17:48.440 –> 00:17:52.079
Speaker:
But since this is early on, I
just don’t know.

389
00:17:52.079 –> 00:17:53.480
Speaker:
I thank you for joining me in

390
00:17:53.480 –> 00:17:55.119
Speaker:

Speaker:

My name is Leonard Barnett and I am Jack W. Barnett’s uncle and I was the person the Posey County Coroner called to inform me that he had my nephew Jack at the morgue in Evansville and he informed me that Jack had committed suicide in a motel in Mt Vernon,Ind. The Four Seasons Motel and that his body could be viewed and his belongings could be picked up there. So after contacting his brother Jeff, uncle Jerry Barnett, uncle Bill Barnett, uncle Mick Jones and Uncle Tom Jones we went to the morgue the following day and after talking with the coroner he showed us Jacks drivers license and he said that this is who he had in the examination room and of us could view the body and we all said no except hie uncle Jerry Barnett and his uncle Bill Barnett and they decided they wanted to see the body so they did and they both told me later that they wished they hadn’t seen Jack’s body.So I drove Jack’s Red Chevy S10 pickup truck back to my house in Chandler and then someone drove it away and I am not sure where it went from there, but I did notice driving it back to my house how clean it was inside and the bed of the truck and sitting in the passenger side floorboard was what look to be brand new camping light. I was also informed by mutual friends that knew Jack and they were behind him in the checkout line and he was buying a shovel and I was told that there was a receipt in his billfold for a shovel and a receipt for a camping light but from two different stores. That’s about all I know for sure but I do personally believe that Jack had already killed his girlfriend and her dog.
